About the Feed a Family Project.
In response to the outbreak of COVID 19, schools in Uganda were closed. Very soon after a total lockdown was announced leading to the closure of all businesses and workplaces, immediately and drastically impacting household incomes.
To measure the level of distress at that moment, we conducted an informal survey of our families. The results were frightening:
1) 78% lost their source of income and do not receive government support,
2) 70% were worried about their ability to feed themselves,
3) 55% ate at least one meal per day a week.
We knew we had to do something. And so the Feed a Family Project was born. Our goal was to keep food on the tables of our 150 children and their families.
The Community Classroom Project
The community classroom (CRMs) was a 5 months experiential project that aimed at enhancing continued learning for children as schools remain closed following COVID-19 pandemic. CRMs were conducted by teachers and community-based teaching assistants.
The project targeted 300 children (3-15yrs) and focused on:
Increased literacy
Increased numeracy among children
Increased skills development (soft &hard skills).
How we did it
We conducted weekly classrooms in groups of 10-15 children while observing the COVID-19 prevention measures. Classrooms were conducted at selected host homes in the community.
